The SAGE radar system 1961
The SAGE radar system 1961

The SAGE System was created by IBM for the Strategic Air Command to detect incoming Soviet Bombers. The SAGE system was never actually used to stop a Russkie nuke, but it did have the very first light pen that gave commands by touching the screen. It's there on the table in front of the screen under the plexiglass box. And so it was the forerunner of drawing tablets and stylus pens of today. For those of you raised after the invention of the microchip, that entire machine you see is the computer! And you're only seeing half of it in the picture. It takes up an entire room.
